3d art in a new, 2d way

Although the next piece of design is simply cutting edge i cannot admit myself that this is a matter of you like it or not. There is no fuss about it and no judgment. Keeping aside the art point of vie one cannot argue about the technology it involves and what this piece of information can further develop into. Only time could tell meanwhile please watch this below.

American artist and researcher Evan Roth has created a series of physical sculptures from
motion-tracked graffiti data. As co-founder of the free art and technology lab (F.A.T. lab)
and the graffiti research lab (G.R.L.) in Brooklyn, Roth is not new to integrating the two
channels of technology and art together.

For 'graffiti analysis: sculptures', a new software called 'GA 3D' was used with an earlier project, 'graffiti analysis', to capture the unseen motion involved in tagging. In collaboration with an anonymous Viennese graffiti writer,
motion data was collected in the streets and converted into workable 3D files.

The models were then made physical through the use of a 3D printer in ABS thermoplastic. The forms
are stretched by time in the z-dimension with pen speed expressed through the varying
thickness of the sculpture. All the information and software used in the project are open source
and available for download online.

„It is half past eight.“ LED lighting technology keeps things readable, and an ambient light sensor keeps the thing from giving your house a neon-lit bar room vibe — which is about the last thing a laptop-priced clock should do. The front surface is made of polished acrylic glass.

QLOCKTWO makes you pause and allows a different view of time in a world that time is essential.

The typographic front combines the moment with the written word and makes it a statement. The lacquered wooden body supports it by means of eight magnets. That way the front surface can be replaced without visible attachments. There are satin stainless steel or five colors of polished synthetic glass to choose from, each generating contrasts or consistencies in interplay with their surroundings.

The only problem i see to is that the display proves that mathematics is not the universal language of the Earth… simply because the numbers are spelled not written :P

The Treasury Table, designed by Lucie Koldová for Process, looks like an ordinary table but under the top hides secret compartments for just about anything from pens to poems.

The concept was inspired by the idea that creative's need specialized spaces to store their items.

The table has drawers sized from A5 to A2, along with compartments perfectly sized for writing utensils. It is made of painted MDF with a matte glass on the surface.

I wonder if it can keep my nightmares on one side and my dreams on the other in perfect harmony…

Better City, Better Life – Shanghai 2010 expo

The theme of Shanghai 2010 Expo is "Better City, Better Life" representing the common wish of the whole humankind for a better living in future urban environments. Open from 1st of May to 31st of October, 2010 Expo is expecting more than 79 million of visitor for all its 200 participants.

“The brilliant structure you see above is not the world’s largest pincushion – it’s Thomas Heatherwick’s recently completed UK Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo.

Dubbed the “Seed Cathedral”, the six-story high structure is studded with 60,000 translucent rods that act as fiber-optic filaments that channel sunlight into the pavilion’s interior. The densely-packed forest of filaments also contains the impetus to create living forests in the future — each 7.5 meter long “branch” contains seeds from the Millenium Seed Bank that will be given to China one the expo has run its course.

Nicknamed the “Dandelion”, Thomas Heatherwick’s UK Pavilion bristles with a dynamic facade that gently flexes and shimmers with each passing breeze. All i can say is that modern technology and human imagination never cease to amaze me!

Woodcut “finger print”

Woodcut prints will always fascinate me.

Growth rings, also referred to as tree rings or annual rings, can be seen in a horizontal cross section cut through the trunk of a tree. Growth rings are the result of new growth in the vascular cambium, alateral meristem, and are synonymous with secondary growth. Visible rings result from the change in growth speed through the seasons of the year, thus one ring usually marks the passage of one year in the life of the tree. The rings are more visible in temperate zones, where the seasons differ more markedly.

The end results usually are impressive enough as it is, but knowing the time and patience to get there just adds to the appreciation.

These tree prints by Bryan Nash Gill certainly offer a new kind of woodcut experience, by letting the trees speak for themselves.

Evian is a French brand of mineral water coming from several sources near Évian-les-Bains, on the south shore of Lake Geneva.

It dates way back to 1789 but it seams that the heap trend is no stranger for the mkt dep.

1789: During a walk, the Marquis of Lessert drank water from the Sainte Catherine spring on the land of a Mr Cachat. The marquis, who was allegedly suffering from kidney and liver problems, drank regularly of the water while he walked, and claimed that his health improved. Encouraged by Lessert's advocacy of the 'miraculous' water, local doctors began to prescribe it as a health remedy. In response to the growing success of the water, Mr Cachat fenced off his spring and began selling the water.

1824: The first baths appeared. The name of the spring was changed from Sainte Catherine to the Cachat Source.

1826: The Duke of Savoy gave his permission to start bottling water from the spring.

1829: The first Société des Eaux Minérales (Mineral Water company) was founded.

Today technology advances at such a speed that often consumers are left in awe of it all.

The high tech terminology, the ultra small, ultra portable, metallic or white devices we carry around with us are, to the vast amount of consumers, simply baffling.

"Dervish" design

This product is easy to install that features a base where wooden sticks are secured within. There are four different colors of sticks available to compliment modern to traditional home design.

This set of room dividers is a good alternative if you are seeking some privacy and separation, but are not looking for a complete wall that will block the view of the other room.

Tin Lamp

The Tin Lamp by Yar Rassadin was meant to be art as much as it is function.
The idea was to do things in reverse as the shade is on the inside of the bulb.
This is a great example of thinking outside of the box… in this cases outside of a light bulb ;)

Recycle Chairs

As you can see, design does not always been related to luxury. Sometimes with things that many people has considered as garbage, a designer thinks the opposite:
This things are extraordinary materials!. Here, for example, I show you three examples of chairs, all of them made by recycled pieces from the beverage industry.

First, we got the SIE43 Chair by Pawel Grunert. The chair is made from PET bottles with a stainless steel frame. The bottles can be easily changed if they show signs of damage. It was exhibited at the Colombari Gallery in Milan, Italy. More pictures and details of this chair can be found on Contemporist.
With light on it, I think this chair is very cool. I imagine it can work on the lounge of a discotheque, don't you think? Let's have a drink seating on this bottle chair. Sound great for me.

Here we have a very interesting design proposal. It's made with a lot of drinking straws, 10.000 to be precise. A design by Scott Jarvie, who had his inspiration on the xylem of the trees. I found "The Clutch Chair" on Design Milk.

I would like to test this chair on a pool... What do you think, it floats or it sinks?
What to do with all of those corks that bottles of wine and champagne includes?. Let´s make a confortable seat! That's probably thought Gabriel Wiese, the designer of this original cork chair. It seems to be very warm and flexible, just for a relaxed posture on a rustic ambient. Don't know you, but I think this design is perfect for a cabin, with a fire place.

Playing footsy under the table

A new interpretation of the phrase "playing footsy” under the table, by way of the Paris based Samal Design, whose almost human tables bring it to mind.

Almost, I say because they are very life like. Well life like in the sense of the idealized male figure rather than the couch potato.

Dzmitry Samal is “inspired by men’s beauty and sensuality”. A bit disarming and some of the poses I dare say a bit awkward… do their best to entice at least a conversation about it or a second look. Okay maybe a third.
Modernly whimsical and offered in futuristic metallic colors of purple, blue, greens and golds, Samal terms his work as “New Retro-Futurism”.
Realized in soft plastic (polypropylene) with a metallic under structure, they look like bronze sculptures incorporated into furniture.

If the table does not quite do it for you or you want more. How about a mirror or a chair that has legs?
I find this free standing closet intriguing. It is certainly reminiscent of a Renaissance figure being extruded from a piece of marble. What is in there anyway?

This begs the question… where is the female counterpart?

Shelf in the Wind

The designer Olivia Bradateanu took design of shelving to new levels with this new design called “Shelf in the Wind”.

This design came from the idea : “What if a simple shelf moved with the breeze that enters the front door?” Poetry in design is explored by studying the transformative properties of the wind and applying them to a common piece of furniture that typically does not communicate above a functional level. The result is a whimsical hardwood shelf that appears to be blowing away or transforming into something else, depending on the viewer’s interpretation.

I suppose the next natural question is “What if a simple television set moved with the breeze that enters the front door?” that would be a site to see :)

How it would be, if a house was dreaming

This is probably the most elaborate 3D projection on architecture that I have ever seen.

You don’t have to believe me, watch the video called “How it would be, if a house was dreaming” and say your opinion. The conception of this project consistently derives from its underlying architecture – the theoretic conception and visual pattern of the Hamburg Kunsthalle.

The Basic idea of narration was to dissolve and break through the strict architecture of O. M. Ungers “Galerie der Gegenwart”. Resultant permeability of the solid facade uncovers different interpretations of conception, geometry and aesthetics expressed through graphics and movement. A situation of reflexivity evolves – describing the constitution and spacious perception of this location by means of the building itself.

Furniture and art often become one thanks to the use of materials and imagination.

This bench or bed of nailsas it may be more commonly referred to was created with an underlying wooden structure that is dark enough to accentuate the flat side of the silver toned nails that form a seating surface that may even be comfortable.

The key here is the spacing of the nails and the combined surface area that they create so the only lasting impression made is in your mind.

This is the perfect piece of furniture for all those who dreamed of becoming a fakir but never made too far…

Black&White clock

The black & white clock by Kibardindesign is AMAZING.

It's too bad it's still a prototype...you better bet your bottom Euros I will be purchasing this when it goes into production.

Digital clock: only figures, no case, only the necessary – only accurate time.

Each figure has self-contained power supply and independent control, it can be fixed to any surface autonomously.

A light sensor will switch the clock to an invert mode: the figures are white in the dark time of day and black at daytime.

Ribbon

In my opinion some conceptual projects just need to stay as an idea.

We can surprise our selves with a fabulous idea, because is so different and innovative, just like this stair named Ribbon.

This project was created by HSH Architects (Petr Hájek, Tomáš Hradečný and Jan Šépka) from Czech Republic. The staircase is constructed from 10mm thick sheet metal. So it's real... awesome, but... don't we are forgetting about the safety of the users?

I guess the house that contain this stairs can't have children inside. At least a clear banisters will be welcome.

But just the metal stair, without any part to hang on... it looks scary for me.

This project made me think... how far can we go when beauty is on command?

Reiko Kaneko who has been developing small design products for the giftware market since 2005, recently expanded their production to the furniture market which officially launched at this years Milan Furniture Fair.

Among the new releases is the "Ovangkol" rectangular dining table that seemingly floats with its legs set in clear crystal resin.

Skilled carpenters in London worked to retain the natural beauty of the wood used to make this weighty table top which is supported by tapering legs that really help break up the otherwise heavy look.

Reiko Kaneko simultaneously released their lighting collection in Milan, and later this year plans on releasing an extensive ceramic and glassware collection for the first time at Pulse London.

“The way from concept to prototype has gone very well, without having to compromise on any important details. The few changes that have been made from the renderings to the final products have been by will and by listening to your feedback in my little survey rather than by necessity. The most noticeable change is the removal of the ornaments and pattern to arrive at a more timeless and clean result. You probably also noticed that it has taken quite a while, but seeng the beautiful result, I think it has been worth the extra time.”

Delta… bed/!?

This is innovation ladies & gentlemen!

The Delta Bed is a design by Nicola From Bern. The fantastic thing about it is that you can use it at the size that you need, because is telescopic.

Yes! pull it from a side, and it will grow!.

I wish to have pictures of the product with pillows and everything, but anyway you can watch how this bed works here. Delta bed is made up of fiberglass reinforced plastic tubes.

Great! Very simple and modern... Let's forget about a big truck in our next home move.

A new, intriguing design has been brought to my attention in an email from an old friend.

The green lamp is not just a regular lamp – it’s made of wire wool and cotton, kitted by hand.

Available in more bright colors, the lamp has a flexible, invisible plastic cone hanging at the end of a 4,5m long wire (also hand knitted) that can be place in multiple positions.

Minimalist and green, Philippe Tyberghien for CercleetCarre does a beautiful green design with his Wookmar’k lamp.

Wish my grandma can knit that :)

tangled inspiration…

Looking for a garden table i paid a quick visit to Ikea, my friendly furniture neighbor ;)

Since they`ve just changed their 09 collection a couple of lamps caught my attention and made me do some research…

Scrap Lab is a group of designers based out of Bangkok’s Kasetsart University’s Architecture program that creates fun and innovative furniture out discarded industrial scraps. The group makes an eclectic variety of furniture, from a funky shaggy lamp to a lounge chair with a quilt-block pattern — all masterfully re-purposing materials that were once considered waste.

While their list of materials includes traditional materials such as wood and metal, it also includes less traditional items such as foam and rope. The purpose of the group’s work is to not only create physical products, but also to collect research on how discarded materials can be used effectively to design functional and aesthetically pleasing pieces.

Pure art

The Louise Blouin Foundation has teamed up with Carpenter’s Workshop Gallery, one of the world’s leading design art dealers, in a collaborative exhibition titled Design High that will feature several of the most important and innovative artists in the field of contemporary design art.

Design High will specifically address the tensions that exist between craft and fine art among some of the most innovative established and emerging artists in the field, including Marc Quinn, Pablo Reinoso, Thierry Dreyfus, Vincent Dubourg and Sebastian Brajkovic.

Working in an idiom that does not preclude a purpose beyond formalist or subjective aims, design art is both celebrated and dismissed for embracing some form of functionality or usefulness. In addition to pieces by some of the most established names in design art such as Marc Quinn and Thierry Dreyfus, the show will feature up-and-coming proponents of the genre that blur and manipulate the line between formalism and functionality.

Sebastian Brajkovic, a celebrated young artist whose works subvert the recognizable forms of historical styles of furniture into surreal and dysfunctional sculpture, will be represented, along with Vincent Dubourg, another artist who uses traditional and found objects, weaving into them the most elemental forms from nature: branches of trees blend with cases, bureaus, chairs, or even a staircase, giving both nature and the objects a new identity and a new functionality.

Other artists like Ingrid Donat work with more traditionally identifiable objects, but Donat casts these in bronze to create pieces of sculptural monumentality. Still others, like Marc Quinn revel in the tactile qualities of glacially-smooth Carrara marble, glass and metal, creating ostensibly functional objects that simultaneously feel far removed from the practical and the everyday.

Barbie Foot

Game rooms everywhere may be a little more on the feminine side thanks to the iconic doll inspired "Barbie Foot" foosball table from designer Chloe Ruchon.

This hot pink indoor football game that pays homage to every young girls best friend and her brothers favorite table game was part of the DMY children exhibition at the Berlin design festival this year.

The Barbie Foot was created in cooperation with Mattel and Baby-Foot Bonzini who specializes in table football.

The best part of all is that brother and sister can now play together :)))

City Shark

Eric Ku is an artist just graduated from School of Visual Arts in

N.Y.C (by the way, he is looking for a job, right now).

Sometimes artists are like magicians. Eric brings to New York City a big shark. He released it on the streets, to swim in the concrete jungle. You better watch the video to see it your self.

Chairs come in bouquets lately…

Designer Tokujin Yoshioka got the inspiration for the "Bouquet Chair" while creating an installation for Moroso's New York showroom which included 30 thousands paper tissues that simulated a cloud-like atmosphere.

The Bouquet Chair features a slim, chromed metal stem with a flower like seat covered by "petals" made of hand-folded fabric squares sewn one by one. Moroso of Italy has a long standing reputation of furniture that is colorful, and cultural and anything but usual.

This simple troubles me and makes me wonder if i should bring my girlfriend a bouquet of chairs or of flowers…

This design concept for a mechanical lock could be the ideal solution to the keyless lock problem.

Coffee schleppers rejoice: you now have a better option for getting those lattes to the office. No more awkward paper trays to balance (or recycle), no more coffee spilt on your shirt/pants/bag/briefcase, no more ridiculing or menial tasks...um, maybe no guarantees on that last part.

Carrying more than one cup can be difficult and trays are unstable when walking and only designed to be used a few times. During New York Design Week, curator Monica Khemsurov organized the McMasterpieces show on the 8th floor of the newly opened Ace Hotel (it opened the day before).

Khemsurov invited a handful of designers to create objects using only materials found in the industrial supply McMaster-Carr catalog.

Placards listed the parts used along with the catalog number - everything from epoxy putty to traffic cones were utilized to create an array of simple and elegant designs.

What a better way to recycle than that?

Whatchawant Stool

Swedish designers Charlotte Ryberg and Johanna Strand created their Whatchawant Stool as a fun piece of furniture that would inspire the imagination.

They built this timeless piece, made of plywood, and containing no screws or superflous parts, with an eye on sustainability and a desire to do away with the “wear out then throw out” mentality often coupled with today’s mainstream furniture.

Meant to last for generations, this modern spin on a rocking horse is destined to become a classic.

Here a quite unusual furniture collection called Stardust, or "dust of stars", the first revolutionary product Mario Bellini signed for Meritalia.

This is a new series of light padded pillows, ottoman, chaise lounge, armchairs, and sofas that use LED lights with a low power consumption / low voltage and high performance included within the individual pieces.

The internal lighting of the Stardust turns them into real source of soft light which can vary throughout the range of colors.

The idea was to use material similar to that used for package padding, a metallic mesh of thin steel wires for structure, and a transparent coating to create this ultra light weight collection that you can also take out back by the pool or patio.

A few years ago I’ve had a dream to own my own pool table, but that dream is not a top priority right now; partially because i do not have the sufficient found and part of the lack of grip on the tac.. or the inspiration towards the game…

Today I’ve found a pool table that is a little more different than most pool tables. Created by Australia-based Nottage Design, the G-1 offers a perfect blend of modern styling and latest technology.

It enjoys a transparent playing area with a glass top and patented resin playing surface.

This pool table has a clear surface made with a Vitrik™ playing surface.

If you’re in NYC for Design Week, I deeply urge you to stop by InDisposed, the cooler, less corporate little brother of the giant International Contemporary Furniture Fair.

An offsite design exhibition taking place at Studio-X, InDisposed aims to explore and possibly debunk the idea our society has lately adopted that disposable = evil.

“After all,” reads their brief, “are disposable objects inherently bad? Doesn’t disposability have some redeeming social value?”

From an auto-cannibalistic table to lego-shaped plastic takeout containers that you can build furniture out of when you are done eating from them, the objects at the show have that fresh, experimental quality that occurs when designers create for the sake of creating rather than when they are stressed to make something sellable.

My first thought about this chair was...

Which is the most important issue to design a chair: Beauty or Comfort?

I like this proposal from the designer Kouichi Okamoto, I think is interesting, classic (shape) and aggressive at the same time.

If anyone take a seat on it, it seems to be flexible, because it use the same principle of a mattress, but... what happened if I want to seat naked on it? Where the comfortable thing goes to?

I love this chair, because it make me think... Oh!, by the way, is not that the purpose of art?

Advice: do not sit on it in the rain… otherwise it will be a home made electric chair :)

Lots of up-and-coming and established designers will present new collections at BKLYN Designs this weekend, and I don’t want to miss a single, solitary piece of work—which is why I love getting an advanced look at what’s to come!

Bill Higendorf, co-founder of Brooklyn–based furniture company Uhuru Design, sent a sneak peak of the three new locally and sustainably produced designs he and partner Jason Horvath are debuting at the expo this week. I have presented only one of them… the rest you can get it either by visiting the show (kind of hard if not a local or not on a budget) or by visiting the website… sure google is always an option :D

While they’re every bit as functional as his previous products, the limited edition Stitched Table, Standard Chair and Metal Stoolen have a little added oomph that sets them apart.

This make you wonder if the Muse is ever going to take vacation… does this mean there is no muse union?! :)

Whoa, check this chair out.

If you're considering a lounge chair in a major-purchase sort of way, you might consider this one for it's relative rarity.

…history insight!
Originally designed in 1963, just 300 pieces were made due to the complexity of the chair's design. Just a few of the originals exist today. One is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
In keeping with Jalk's intentions, the chair and tables are reproduced in their original materials, teak and Oregon pine as well as black-stained ash. Two pieces of wood are molded and conjoined in this daring design, which won Britain's Daily Mail Design Competition in 1963.

If you like to own a piece of history, this is the must have item!

Sebastián Errázuriz

occupies each of these titles and more with his smart, irreverent creations and he's causing quite a stir in the design community.

Born in Santiago, Chile and currently living here in New York, the 31 year old designer displayed his latest work with Christina Grajales's gallery at this year's Design Miami.

I`ve first got excited about his designs when i`ve discovered his Repisa N5 shelving system that resembles piano keys that swivel off the wall when you want to put something on them. Smart, functional and clever, each of his creations is a unique blend of artistry and whimsy. I have a feeling I'm going to hear a lot more from this young talent; at least i hope so. His imagination makes being inspired a no-brainer (unfortunatey this is literally the case for the poor goose below). No question here, this chair is a stylish statement. In fact, German born Mercedes-Benz vehicle designer turned furniture designer Stefan Heiliger has certainly hit the mark with his entire collection.

The continuous curved chair is available in over 100 different microfibre colors (as well as leather) and offers a 360 degree swivel function. Fire-resistant infused foam padding on a chromium coated metal base makes this chair a smart choice for either commercial or residential settings.

The Question Mark chair was the winner of the 2008 Red Dot Award.

Bio Carpet

Among all the great green designs discovered at the 2009 Milan Furniture Fair, this beautiful biodegradable moss planter at the Tokyo Fiber Sensware exhibition definitely stood out.

Japan-based flower artist Makoto Azuma collaborated with Unitika Ltd. to create an indoor glade, populating the planter with an assortment of mosses.

The result is an exquisite organic carpet that runs through the exhibition, passing round the furniture and the poles and stunning visitors with its delightful presence.

This is an op[en invitation for all those who dream to become a gardener but cannot dare to! The moss needs only water… and loves to cares your naked feet!

So, ever since seeing the photo (taken by Debi Treloar) of this bed (in Studio Ilse's 661 london road project), I've been a little obsessed with finding cobalt blue sheets and perhaps taking on the task of adding a wall mural somewhere in my home. While I have had absolutely no luck in finding the sheets (it's apparently impossible), there are quite a few wall mural sources online.

Surface View, which is perhaps the most entertaining, has a large image collection along with a snazzy 'see in room' option where you get to see your selected image as a mural, window blind or canvas art (see upper right photo).

There's also Murals Your Way which has what looks to be a decent brick wall and some other stuff worth considering.

My personal favorite is the Galaxy mural wall paper (shown lower right) from designyourwall.com. They also have a nice bamboo forest wallpaper that could be nice in a powder room or something.

Karton Art Design

We’ve all seen quite a bit of experimentation with cardboard on Inhabitat, but Hungarian husband & wife team Edith Szilvasy (formerly an artist) and Andras (Andrew) Balogh (a carpenter) have taken cardboard building to the next level by inventing a system of constructing furniture that uses only cardboard and ordinary paper clips.

The development of the system has taken 3 years, but for Karton Art Design, that time has been time well spent.

Andras developed a a method of folding and clipping the cardboard so that their finished products are as strong as wood and as light as paper — and can be integrated with existing wood products.

Karton’s products featured at the fair include: shelving units, chairs, and even a restored hutch.

Twist Chair

Personally I have to say that I love books, and I with I could read faster, because there are so many interesting things on the internet and so many books but so little time in a day.

Today I’ve found a beautiful way to store your books designed by Jordi Milà.

The WisdomTree is for people who see books as a source of knowledge and emotions and not simply as decorative objects. Its fluid and organic shape is inspired by growth of a plant. The books that represent the fruit of knowledge are supported by pieces covered in leather. The Wisdom Tree is a magnificent name for this extraordinary bookshelf.

Brush furniture

Designed by UK designer Jason Taylor, these series of seating that appear to be over sized scrubbers and brushes are some very interesting and unique pieces of furniture.

The ‘Imagine Brush Table’ is a square shaped table that has a wooden top and a yellow haired base which using the hundreds of

individual pieces to support the table.

The whole series appears to be over sized versions of actual crubbers, making us believe that in addition to sitting on, the pieces could also give your floors a bit of a sweep.

Gustavo Garcia's Web site Susu allows users to create custom art prints based on patterns generated from their personal photos.

This work will be showcased at New York's School of Visual Arts "Potential Energy: 19 Designers Set Their Ideas in Motion," an exhibition of products, campaigns and services developed by graduating Design MFA students.

Unfortunately Susu is still just a prototype and not commercialized, one of the goals of the show however is to help students get attention and help bring these projects closer to commercial reality.

This remindes me of the DNA11 project…

Pillow drift

Beach Ball lamps – just play!

Some of the most exciting discoveries from the Milan Furniture Fair 2009 can be seen at the Designersblock show, an exhibition of some of the edgiest experiments in modern design.

That’s where Toby Sanders, from the design studio TOBYhouse, recently launched his brand new range of lighting products: super-colorful Beach Ball Lamps. I`ve spotted Toby’s eye-catching lamps at Designersblock and I`m charmed by his clever re-use of a cherished childhood icon.

Just remember: kicking the lamp is not on option in this case!

Saving space vase

Italian designer Joe Velluto has designed 'space saving vase' for Plust Collection. It will be on display as part of the 'plasticism' exhibition at Spazio Rosanna Orlandi during Milan Design week 09.

Velluto's design poses the question are you a bottle or a vase? in a sarcastic exchange of roles, 'saving space vase' undertook a pressure process as it came out of the mould - the concept imitates that of pressing a PET bottle.

PLUST Collection presents a new approach based on manufacturing processes and innovative finishes derived from the moulding of plastic with changes,

More than just a lamp!

Studio System is an expandable "building system for creative professionals", a light you buy in parts to spot light audio equipment, diorama backgrounds, etc.

"The simple and fundamental idea behind the Studio System was to design a system that is flexible, expandable and with superior quality and strength. All parts have standard ISO mounting holes with dimensions M6, M4, M3 and M2. All tubes have a diameter of 9mm and comes in a variaty of lengths."

Teenage Engineering products are designed and made in Sweden and include not only Studio System but synthesizers and audio gear (their new OP-1 was a hit at the Musik Messe show) and... an electric bike.

XRay Light

Awe-some. Imagine that said in a sing-song voice, sort of louder than what would be appropriate in public.

Korean Designer Wonsuk Cho has designed a series of lights based on the light box commonly used to examine X-Ray film.

These whimsical lights are created by taking X-rays of single incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs. The images are subsequently mounted onto small black boxes which hang from the ceiling and once illuminated reveal their skeletal structure.

Awe-some again!

Couture Line of Furniture

Vincent Cadena and Emmanuel Touraine’s Divine furniture collection for Ventury Studio in France are as graceful as they are chic.

Very correctly marketed as a “couture line of furniture,” each of Divine’s editions are detailed slightly differently:

“Glam” to serve as an fashionable accent in a modern room design;
“Steel” a balancing piece for a blend of traditional and contemporary design;
“Glitz” to serve as a focal, sculptural furniture piece in a light, artistic space.

A clean fusion of 1960s modernist furniture with French Rococo accents, Divine is a very well-thought-out combination of designs that could work in many contexts.

The great thing about Fuorisalone, or events outside the Salone, is that so many are carefully curated installations.

Now, that may not be everyone's cup of espresso, but it's what keeps me going.

Trompe l'oeil rugs to covet, but I'm a sucker for black/white photo style tapis. Danish Mindcraft did it again. Very strong pieces in a lovely setting, thanks to the same curator.

It's Not a TV, It's a Tati Lamp

Maybe it's just me, but I've been staring at this image for a while now, waiting for a football game or something to pop on the "screen."

Called the Tati Lamp, it's one of many of Ferruccio Laviani's designs being shown off during Milan Design Week 09.

Completely black when off and white when on, this photo skews the lamp's scale in an enjoyably preposterous way. In reality, the Tati Lamp doesn't take up all the space of an old rear projection big screen. It fits right on the table.

Illuminated Sofa

Stardust is a set of sofas and pillows that illuminate from within.

Sancal Elipse Table

Sure, you expect a $1,000+ table to make a statement, but few are as complex as Rafa Garcia's gravity-defying table with protruding forearms, allegedly a celebration of "the male spirit."

Coming in black or white lacquer, the table can be square or rectangle, for £773 and £991 respectively. The fiber-board top and bottom are held together by an enamel-coated steel tube which is hard to see at some angles, giving the impression that the top half just floats there. I'm not contemporary art critic, but I think it says a lot, starting with: "Yes, it is true, everything but my arms are hyperdimensionally encoded in the top half of this table sandwich. But hey, I'm all good."

Recycled Eggshell Stationary

Designer Nicolas Cheng of Studioroom906 is presenting this beautiful set of stationary made from recycled eggshells at the Milan Furniture Fair this week.

In his “Childhood Memories” collection, Cheng uses wasted eggshells that undergo a “high pressure technique” to create a new material that utilizes the existing proteins and mineral crystals from the shells.

100 recycled eggshells are used per set which includes a pencil, pencil holder, eraser and A5 paper.

Hot Plate

I Will Buy Flowers Myself exhibit

currently on display in Milan, is an appliance with a story.

Zupanc designed the hot plate exclusively for Gorenje, a design-oriented creator of home appliances based in Slovenia.

Per Gorenje "Mrs. Dalloway is deconstructing the myth that household appliances are only made for kitchens and housewives. Due to its unusual shape, it comes closer to resembling a fashion accessory than a kitchen appliance." More after the jump.

Face chair

These tame creatures have been identified as 'Face' chairs by Bora Çakılkaya, an expert in this particular chair species, and some would say its mastermind.

Bora is a designer and partner of Istanbul-based design firm p-arch, where it is believed that the Face chairs were first created in scenes reminiscent of Frankenstein.*

The Face chairs seem to be perfectly at ease around humans, however potential owners should be aware that the chairs may be prone to midnight shenanigans, and have been known to stumble back into their houses in the early hours of the morning, wearing oversized sunglasses and clutching desperately to a very large coffee.

Aside from these occasional indiscretions, Face chairs are generally jovial creatures who can adapt to most living environments.

*No chairs were harmed in the production of this article.
